creamy, healthy cinnamon toast crunch smoothie (bowl)

Winter or not, smoothie bowls have been my STAPLE breakfast meal for the past few months or so. Aren't I sick of them yet? Actually no. Keyah and I are constantly playing with different variations for smoothies in the kitchen- whether the smoothie ingredients themself or even the toppings, we're always changing it up!!

My personal favourite this winter is definitely this dessert inspired cinnamon toast crunch smoothie. It's packed full of protein, fibre and healthy fats. You could even add some sweet potato into the mix to make it that much more filling for breakfast or lunch (admittedly, I've even eaten this for dinner lol).

 This healthy take on cinnamon toast crunch cereal is one that gives me all the warm and fuzzy feels. Cinnamon has SO many health benefits so I try including it in as many of my recipes as possible. Some of cinnamon's most powerful benefits include; antioxidant rich, anti inflammatory properties, decrease the risk of heart disease and lowers blood sugar levels.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Smoothie

Ingredients 

  • 1/2 c gluten free quick oats
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 c unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbsp ginger, ground
  • 2 tbsp yellow macca
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 scoop vegan vanilla protein 
  • 4 pitted dates
  • 1 tbsp chia seed powder 
  • 1 tbsp stevia 
  • 1 tbsp almond butter

+ 1/2 handful ice

*optional: cacao powder, sweet potato, frozen cauliflower

All thats left to do is top this supercharged smoothie with all your favourites. I like to add some cut up fresh fruit such as bananas or strawberries, low sugar granola and definitely much more cinnamon.

I like you so matcha

...isn't that what everyone's saying these days? What is matcha and why the heck is everyone so obsessed with it as of late? It's being used in lattes, oats, baking and even cocktails! After doing some much needed research on the product myself, I've come to learn that matcha is actually an ancient trend that has recently made it's way back in popularity.

Matcha is an ancient Japanese greentea in powder form that is said to have amazing effects on the human body. For some, drinking matcha is a great alternative to coffee as it still contains caffeine (53 to 72 milligrams per serving, to be exact) but leaves you without feeling the jitters you may experience while drinking traditional coffee.

Why should you love matcha?

Well for one, the colour is naturally so pure and green it's really fun to play with (or is that just me?). Matcha is also known to have a ton of antioxidant rich properties that have been said to combat certain types of cancers (anti-cancer effects, if you will) through the high concentration of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Matcha also compliments fat burning by lowering blood glucose levels and boosting antioxidant activity.

So, if you aren't sold on the magic green beverage yet, try out this recipe for a homemade matcha latte and then let me know ;)

ingredients

  • 1 cup almond milk (or any nut milk!)
  • 1 *heaping* spoon matcha powder (I used David's Tea)
  • 1/2 cup boiled hot water
  • 1 teaspoon stevia (recommended as I find matcha quite bitter)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or peppermint extract (optional, but better!)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

Combine ingredients together in blender and mix on high speed for 2-minutes or until frothy. Pour into your favourite instagramable mug & enjoy! xx

all about diy almond milk

Let's talk about DIY almond milk for a second because I mean, it's friggen bomb! I'm always game to create any milk substitutes when possible- how do you feel about traditional cow's milk?

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup almonds (raw, unsalted & soaked overnight)
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 1 tsp organic vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp organic virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon (+ maybe a little more...)
  • 1 tsp stevia
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

Method

  1. Place soaked almonds and water into the Vitamix and secure lid
  2.  Add remaining ingredients into your Vitamix
  3. Turn on Vitamix. Select variable increase speed slowly from 1 to 10 for approximately 1 - 1.5 minute
  4. OPTIONAL: Strain through cheesecloth or nut milk bag (I personally do not strain- the pulp has all the fibre!)
  5. Enjoy!!! <3 

Cow's Milk Debate - Y/N?

Vanilla Cashew Nut Milk

Let's chat! Recently something that I've been actively integrating into my lifestyle is making my "milk" from scratch. I have been seeing a lot more information surface online & social media surrounding the idea of how *terrible* cow's milk is for human beings.. After reading the facts on both pros & cons for the ongoing cow's milk debate I have made my own personal decision to cut it out of my diet (as much as possible) for the following reasons;

  • milk is a highly processed food (it's definitely not what it used to be)
  • said to causes acne
  • said to increase/causes ovarian sists
  • may cause prostate cancer
  • contributes to high cholesterol levels
  • high in saturated fat
  • very high sugar content
  • poor source of calcium (despite popular belief)
  • said to cause weight gain
  • finally, homemade simply tastes better!!!

With all that being said, try making a non-dairy milk at home for yourself that you can use as a substitute for that yucky cow stuff! I know it can be challenging at times when you're out either working or on the go, but wherever possible, try integrating non-dairy milk products and watch closely for the results! Even popular restaurants now carry non-dairy milk products, whether it be soy, hemp, almond or even coconut, more brands are jumping on the dairy-free train!

*If you happen to have any other insights into the cow's milk debate pls feel free to comment below or PM me with your thoughts! I'm also super interested in the pros/cons of using soy milk as a milk substitute when necessary. I don't know too much about soy milk health benefits/detriments besides the commonly referenced "high in estrogen" comment. Would love to hear from you!

Smoothie Sunday!

The only reason my friends come over to visit me is when I offer to make them food.... haha, I guess I set myself up for this by offering in the first place!!

This Sunday's Smoothie Bowl is filled with a mixture of blueberries, blackberries, banana, strawberry, mango, shredded coconut, vanilla protein powder, white chia seeds, almond milk & ice cubes! Super simple but super delish. Offer to make it for your friends and I'm sure you will have more visitors!

Smoothie bowl to soothe the soul

Serves: two large smoothie bowls

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 ripe banana
  • 1/4 ripe avocado
  • 1 cup blueberries, frozen
  • 1 cup strawberries, frozen
  • 1/2 cup pitted cherries, frozen
  • 2 large handfuls spinach
  • 2 1/2 cups cup non dairy almond milk
  • 2 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 handful ice cubes

toppings:

  • banana, sliced
  • kiwi, sliced
  • goji berries
  • granola
  • flax seed, ground
  • coconut, shredded
  • hemp hearts

Method:

  1. Place spinach, flax seeds, ripe banana, avocado and non-dairy milk into your Vitamix/blender and puree until smooth.
  2.  Next, add all frozen ingredients including; blueberries, strawberries, pitted cherries & ice cubes and blend (don't puree too much! It's nice to have some texture to the smoothie bowl)
  3. Pour your smoothie into a white bowl (for the photo, obviously!)
  4. Lastly, add some fun and colourful toppings to your smoothie bowl creation!
  5. Enjoy immediately aka don't wait too long or it will melt! ;)

The time has come again - Friday, that is! Thank gosh for the weekend. The past couple of weeks have been beyond killer and sadly I haven't created enough time to post a couple of my new recipes.

So, here's a new one for ya :)

STRAWBERRY + CAKE + SMOOTHIE = HEAVEN 

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups. organic frozen strawberries
  • 1 small frozen banana 
  • 1/2 scoop creamy french vanilla protein 
  • 2.5 cups. creamy cashew milk
  • 1/3 cup raw cashews
  • 1/3 cup quick organic oats
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp. maca powder
  • 1 tbsp. ground flax meal
  • 1 tbsp. hemp hearts 
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. organic maple syrup  

+ blend with 1 cup ice & enjoy!!

'It's Pumpkin season

Pumpkin pie smoothie on an Autumn day. So cliche? Maybe. And so yummy. And it's green too!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup frozen spinach
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tbsp. maca powder
  • 3 pitted medjool dates
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 2 tbsp. ground flax meal
  • 2 tbsp. shredded unsweetened coconut

+ blend with ice

Topped with shredded coconut and cinnamon :) Enjoy

Creamy pumpkin-pie smoothie for two

I love pumpkin! Pumpkin pie, pumpkin sweet potatoes, pumpkin bread and yes, even pumpkin smoothies. Get ready for a sea of pumpkin recipes coming from me this fall!

What you'll need....

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup organic purred pumpkin 
  • 1/4 cup greek yogurt
  • 3/4 cups coconut milk or almond milk
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract 
  • ice  

optional: protein, maple syrup , maca powder

Morning Matcha

Benefits of drinking Matcha Tea:

  • Increases energy
  • calming
  • lowers cholesterol
  • rich in fibre
  • rich in antioxidants
  • stabilizes blood sugar levels
  • boosts metabolism
  • fights against bacteria.

Ingredients + tools:

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder

  • 1/4 cup boiling water

  • 3/4 cup almond milk or any milk of choice

  • honey to taste

  • almond extract

  • matcha whisk

  • bowl

  • mug

Method:

  1. Bring 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, or cow's milk to a bare simmer in a small pot over medium-high heat. Once the milk is simmered add 1 package of natural sweetener.

  2. Place 1 teaspoon matcha powder in a mug or bowl.

  3. Slowly whisk in 1/4 cup boiling water, then almond milk, and stir until the matcha becomes a thick green paste consistency 

  4. Sweeten with a natural sweetener.

Got called off of work today due to the rainy weather that we are supposed to be getting. Hallelujah, an official day off! To celebrate I made my mom and I a new smoothie recipe to try out. This one was really great. It tastes super sweet and smooth! Enjoy

  • 1 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 cups spinach, chopped
  • 1 tbsp organic raw honey
  • 1 scoop vanilla (ice-cream flavour) protein (natural whey brand)
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 2 cups almond milk
  • 1 tbsp ground flax
  • 1 tbsp hemp hearts

Lean x Green

{Mango.Spinach.Ginger.Date} Smoothie

I had this idea that I would like to start doing a series called 'lean X green' to create new green style recipes weekly over the course of the summer. I hope that once things in my life begin to calm down I will have more time to work on a project like this! For now, at least, please enjoy this green smoothie recipe :)

  • 1 mango, diced
  • 1 tbsp flax seed
  • 1 tbsp hemp hearts
  • 1 tbsp stevia
  • 2 cups spinach, chopped and frozen
  • 2 pitted dates
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp organic virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • Ice

Method:

  1. First add about 1 cup of ice into your blender
  2. Next combine all ingredients in blender; process until smooth
  3. Add more liquid if necessary

Whenever I'm not feeling so hot I always try to fill my body up with more vitamins and nutrients as an attempt to quickly heighten & strengthen my depleted immune system. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Regardless I try!

  • 1 small mango, diced
  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon flax, ground
  • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1.5 cup ice

Method:

Start with adding the ice into the bottom of your blender. Next add the rest of the ingredients. Blend ingredients until smooth. Top with hemp hearts

Spring has Sprung!

Carrot Apple Ginger Juice

Welcome Home Spring!! I have been waiting for you (well, actually I think we all have…) I love that as soon as the weather begins to brighten, my love for juices and smoothies explodes yet again! Ideal Vision: Waking up super early and going to a yoga class- then coming home to drink a homemade smoothie or juice on my deck with only a tank top on (because it's so warm outside) and being next to my dog! #itsallaboutthelittlethings ;)

Servings:

2

Ingredients:

  • 1 granny smith apple
  • 3 carrots
  • 1/3 inch (1 cm) square piece ginger root
  • 3 cups filtered water
  • 1 cup ice

Method:

  1. Clean apple, carrots, and ginger
  2. Cut off the leafy top of the carrots
  3. Place all ingredients into the vitamix container and seal the lid
  4. Select variable 1
  5. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute, using the tamper to press the ingredients into the blades
  6. Strain with nut milk bag or mesh cloth 
  7. Refrigerate before serving
  8. Drink within 72 hours!
  9. ENJOY xo

I think I have officially fallen in love with making smoothies and baking with carrots… Expect more carrot recipes to come!

Ingredients:

  • 3 carrots, peeled 
  • 1 cup baby spinach (always have to add something green!)
  • 1 cup vanilla almond milk (or milk of your choice)
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon, ground
  • 1 tsp nutmeg, ground
  • 1/2 tsp ginger, ground
  • + blended with 1 cup ice 

Optional: Rolled Oats, Maca Powder, Honey (also agave, or stevia), or Dates
