Why I'm Eating Paleo

Paleo Diet Challenge

What is Paleo? You may be wondering? The Paleo diet (or caveman diet) is based upon the idea of eating foods that our bodies were designed for through thousands of years of evolution. The diet consists of eating foods that were available to our hunter-gather ancestors during the "Paleolithic" era.

It focuses on eating vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, poultry and nuts. And avoiding grains, dairy, legumes, starches and processed foods and sugars.

The modern day foods that we consume have become highly processed and frequently contribute to weight gain, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and numerous other health problems. Paleo enthusiasts claim that the Paleo diet can reduce the chances of obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and infertility.

The Basics:

  • Higher protein intake
  • Lower carbohydrate intake and lower glycemic index
  • Higher fibre intake
  • Moderate to higher fat intake & polyunsaturated fats with balanced omega-3 and omega-6 fats
  • Higher potassium & lower sodium intake
  • Stabilize blood sugar levels

I was first introduced to eating Paleo through my local CrossFit gym, Transition CrossFit. (www.transitioncrossfit.com) The Paleo Diet and crossfitters are closely connected because of improved performance based on increased muscle mass while becoming stronger, faster, and fitter as a whole through "clean" eating techniques. If you are at all curious about trying CrossFit or wish to know more about this style of work out please e-mail co-owner Adam of Transition Crossfit located in Oakville at transitioncrossfit@gmail.com ! Adam is lululemon Oakville's CrossFit ambassador extraordinaire! If you are from the GTA and wish to try a CrossFit class I would be happy to go with you whether you are a new beginner or avid CrossFit goer!

Between today till March 24th(3 weeks) I will be eating from the Paleo diet. My girlfriend Jill and I have decided that we want to nourish our body with the healthiest vitamins, minerals, veggies, fruits, nuts, and proteins that we can find. I mostly wish to restart my internal system before leaving for a trip and focus on whole, clean, and real food!  This diet may also be great to take into consideration for someone who has experienced problems with digesting grains or dairy products.

If you have any questions about what I will be eating over the next three weeks, please feel free to reach out! I can post an update to let you know how it's going for me and what my meals look like.

Ky xoxo

If a caveman couldn't eat it, neither should you.
